March 2010
We are pleased to announce the creation of this website for the Kitanagoya City International Association (KIIA) with the cooperation of individual, corporate and organization members as well as KIIA volunteers.
The Kitanagoya City International Association was established to nurture human resources with a global mindset on October 27, 2007 borne of EXPO 2005, Aichi Japan. After its establishment, we signed a friendship city agreement with Muan County in Korea on July 9, 2008 after sending a delegation to consider the relationship. Now, in the fourth year, we have created this website as a new means for communication to publicize and realize the objectives of KIIA and promote internationalization, international understanding and friendship in Kitanagoya.
At present, Kitanagoya City has over 1,500 foreign residents. We realize that building good relationships with our new neighbors is no less important than promoting exchange with cities abroad. We need to get to know each other and our cultures. KIIA is dedicated to building a multicultural society, a society wherein people of different nationalities and cultures respect each other and live together as partners in the community on equal terms. Our diverse programs shall be introduced on this website, and we look forward to your understanding and participation in the opportunities organized for international exchange.
In closing, I would like to express my appreciation to our citizens, organizations, and companies for their support for our efforts for international exchange and look forward to your support and cooperation.

Programs (Excerpt from the Terms) |
The association performs the following programs to achieve its objectives:
|
October 2007
International exchange by local governments is now at a turning point. Up till now, exchanges between cities were the main focus. Circumstances have changed. More people are learning about other cultures. People have more understanding of the global society. More foreign residents live in Japan and our communities, and programs for foreign residents are being promoted. More and more citizens are engaged in a wider range of activities including international cooperation, making contributions around the globe. In Kitanagoya, too, we have more foreign residents and building good relationships with our new neighbors is of greater concern than exchanges with cities abroad. At the same time, globalization brings about cultural exchange which can spur development in the region. Exchanges spark new energy and new ideas, and can vitalize the local community. In this sense, international exchange has the potential to change and vitalize the community.
However, it is also true that the growing number of foreign residents does not automatically lead to better understanding of other cultures by Japanese residents. A time will come when we need to seek ways to coexist with diverse cultures, and we must raise citizens’ awareness to this end. Local businesses also have more opportunities to go overseas now, and communities and local governments need to explore ways to vitalize the region through international connections. We are now entering an age where we cannot do without building relations and sharing information on a global scale.
Against this backdrop, international exchange must include the building of a network which involves not just local governments, but also citizens, schools, private entities, NPOs and people of all walks of life. Accumulation of information and resources by local governments is meaningless in itself, it must be shared. Organizations for international exchange must be more flexible and liberal. Activities for international exchange must cover a broader area and involve new participants. Therefore, we establish the Kitanagoya City International Association with wide support from citizens, organizations, and companies, in the aim of contributing to the vitalization of the area and world peace.
Kitanagoya City International Association
The Kitanagoya City International Association (KIIA) is engaged in creating opportunities for international exchange, nurturing human resources with a global mindset, and regional development by citizens through international exchange. We believe that through international exchange, we can look at Japan from a new perspective, deepen our understanding, and contribute to making our region better.
We look forward to your understanding and support to achieve our objectives.
